R: Mr Jorge Chediek, UNOSSC Director and Envoy of the UN Secretary-general on South South Cooperation Congratulates Amb. Adonia Ayebare, PR of Uganda to the UN in New York

The 71st President of the UN General Assembly, Mr Peter Thomson, on 30th May 2016 appointed Uganda's Permanent Representative, to the UN in New York, Amb Adonia Ayebare, President of the High-Level Committee on South-South Cooperation.

Ayebare's appointment was made Pursuant to paragraph 30 of General Assembly resolution 71/1244 on South-South Cooperation, adopted by the Assembly on 21 December 2016. In execution of his work, Amb Ayebare will be supported by the bureau of the High-Level Committee, to lead the intergovernmental consultations and negotiations with a view to the adoption, by the Assembly, of a resolution on the nature, date, objectives and modalities of the High-Level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation.

In a letter to all Permanent representatives, Mr Thomson thanked Ambassador Ayebare and, through him, the bureau of the High-Level Committee on South-South Cooperation, for accepting this very important responsibility. He asked all the Permanent Representatives to extend their full support and cooperation to him. "Given the short time available and the work-pressure on delegations at this time of the year, I urge all delegations to work towards reaching agreement in the most efficient manner possible" he said.

Speaking from the Uganda Mission in New York, Amb Ayebare thanked the PGA for the faith he had placed in him and by extension in Uganda. "South South cooperation has never been more relevant than today, especially in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. I will also promote triangular cooperation in the developed North," he said.

In 1974, the United Nations General Assembly, endorsed the establishment of a special unit within the United Nations Development Programme to promote technical co-operation among developing countries.
