IOM Regional Director Meets Hon Okello Oryem

Hon. Okello ORYEM, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, this morning met with Mr. Mohammed ABDIKER, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Regional Director for East and Horn of Africa at the Ministry Headquarters.

Mr. Abdiker who was accompanied by Mr. Tejan Savage SANUSI, Chief of Mission IOM Uganda, called on the Office of the Minister to discuss matters of mutual interest to IOM and Uganda. Hon. Oryem welcomed the Regional Director and praised the work that IOM is doing in Uganda.

The Regional Director commended Uganda for not only its continued commitment and dedication to Regional Integration, Peace and Security but also its humanitarian efforts as demonstrated by her open-door refugee policy.  

The Minister expressed his gratitude to the Regional Director for IOM's development assistance and reiterated Uganda's commitment to hosting and supporting refugees. 

Last year IOM supported Uganda's repatriation efforts of Ugandans stranded abroad due to the COVID-19 pandemic by organising a number of flights from Saudi Arabia. IOM recently donated a boat and two vehicles to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to boost border management operations.
