Hon. Odongo Concludes Successful Visit to Hungary

Hon. Abubakhar Jeje Odongo, Minister of Foreign Affairs has concluded a two-day visit to Budapest, at the invitation of his Hungarian counterpart, H.E Peter Szijjarto. The visit was aimed at strengthening the ties between Uganda and Hungary.

During the bilateral talks on 22nd November 2021, the Ministers reviewed the status of implementation of the MoUs and agreements signed between the two countries in the various fields. They also exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.

Hon. Odongo expressed satisfaction with the progress in the bilateral cooperation and thanked the Hungarian Government for sharing technologies and experiences in Water purification, Security, Tourism development among others in the several projects undertaken in Uganda. He also lauded Hungary for the 20 scholarships offered to Ugandan students to pursue studies in Hungary this academic year. Another 32 scholarship opportunities will be offered next academic year.

H.E Peter Szijjarto reiterated his country's commitment to strengthen cooperation with Uganda. He lauded Uganda's progressive policy on refugees and efforts to contribute to regional peace and stability. He mentioned that Hungary's development cooperation programme in Uganda aimed at contributing to socio-economic development in line with national priorities.

H.E Szijjarto was pleased that some of the projects had been completed with the local community enjoying the benefits such as the water project in Rwamwanja refugee settlement in Kamwenge District, the first phase of the cyber security project among others. He reiterated his country's support to Uganda Heart Institute with advanced cardiology equipment and looked forward to the commissioning of the project by March 2022.

The Ministers further discussed opportunities to further grow the cooperation particularly in areas of Trade and Investment facilitation, Agriculture, development of Aquatic sports among others.

The Ministers exchanged views on other international issues in the context of the current global environment, including the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Terrorism, Climate Change among others. They agreed to strengthen cooperation and consultation at the multilateral fora.

Following the bilateral talks, an MoU on cooperation in the field of Diplomatic Training was signed. The MoU provides for participation by diplomatic officials in each other country's training programmes.

In 2019, Hungary launched a 16 million-euro development cooperation programme in Uganda.  A number of projects have since been implemented in Water Management, Cyber Security, Tourism, Health among other fields.
