BILATERAL POLITICAL CONSULTATIONS BETWEEN THE REPUBLIC OF UGANDA AND THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN
Kampala, 3rd February 2025 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uganda hosted a high-level delegation from the Islamic Republic of Iran for a bilateral political consultation aimed at strengthening the long-standing relations between the two nations.
The Iranian delegation was led by Mr. A. Khosavinez, Assistant Minister and Director- General for Africa, while the Ugandan delegation was headed by Ambassador John Leonard Mugerwa, Head of the International Legal and Social Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kampala. The consultations provided an opportunity for bothsides to engage in comprehensive discussions on areas of mutual interest, including political cooperation, trade and investment, education, health, and technological exchange.
In his remarks, Ambassador Mugerwa underscored the deep-rooted historical ties between Uganda and Iran and reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to further strengthening diplomatic engagements with the Islamic Republic of Iran. He highlighted the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation in advancing shared aspirations for sustainable development and economic growth.
Mr. Khosavinez expressed Iran’s appreciation for Uganda’s hospitality and reaffirmed Iran’s dedication to fostering closer collaboration across various sectors. He emphasized Iran’s willingness to enhance trade and economic partnerships with Uganda, particularly in the fields of energy, infrastructure development, and agricultural technology.
Both delegations acknowledged the significance of diplomatic dialogue in addressing regional and global challenges and reaffirmed their commitment to upholding multilateralism and international cooperation. They also reiterated the need to enhance people-to-people exchanges to deepen mutual understanding and cultural ties between the two nations.
The bilateral consultations concluded on a positive note, with both sides agreeing to strengthen mechanisms for implementation of agreed areas of cooperation and to hold regular consultations to monitor progress. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uganda remains committed to deepening partnerships with the Islamic Republic of Iran and other friendly nations in pursuit of common goals for peace, security, and development.
