REGIONAL ECONOMIC COOPERATION DEPARTMENT (REC)
The Department is responsible for handling the East African Community, regional and continental economic organisations (such as COMESA, IGAD, SADC, NEPAD etc.).
 
The key functions of the Department include:
 
  • Strengthening and promoting regional coperation and integration initiatives taking into account need to reduce overlap and duplication; and enhancing efficiency.
  • Promoting a peaceful strategy/mechanism to address border demarcation issues and finalising protocols with neighbouring countries and depositing them with the AU and UN.
  • Strengthening a coordinated and cooperative mechanism between Ministry and other national ecomin stakeholders.
  • Lobby positions for placement of Uganda or Ugandans in regional political organisations.
  • Supporting the business community and professionals to tap opportunities in the region.
  • Promoting gradualist, systematic and integrated approach to continental integration.
  • Supporting the fast tracking of the East African integration process.
  • Promoting initiatives on joint exploitation or development of shared natural resources like Lake Victoria, the Nile River, Lake Albert, for the mutual benefit.
  • Promote Uganda as a favourite destination for foreign direct investment, tourists and holiday makers.
  • Strengthening and widening its outreach its embassies in Africa, putting emphasis or focus on economic diplomacy and integration.
