HON. GEN. ODONGO JEJE ABUBAKHAR, MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS MEETS H.E TANIA PEREZ XIQUES, AMBASSADOR OF THE REPUBLIC OF CUBA
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, held a meeting with the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, H.E Tania Perez Xiques. The Minister and the Ambassador exchanged views on bilateral issues of
mutual interest, as well as international developments affecting both countries.
On bilateral relations, the Ambassador informed the Minister that this year marks 60 years of diplomatic relations between Uganda and Cuba. She described the relations as excellent and mutually beneficial. The Minister expressed gratitude to Cuba for the assistance offered to Uganda, noting that the establishment of the Mbarara University of Science and Technology, was such a landmark in Uganda – Cuba relations. The Cuban Ambassador expressed satisfaction with the political relations between the two countries, and expressed confidence that the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding would enhance trade and economic ties between Uganda and Cuba.
The Minister briefed the Ambassador about Uganda’s agenda as Chair of the Non Aligned Movement and G77+China, especially in championing the interests of the Global South in terms of security, conflict management, economic development. The Minister and the ambassador condemned unilateral sanctions that are undertaken by some countries, noting that they are an obstacle to achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals an undermine multilateralism in the global system.
