H.E JOHAN BORGSTAM, E.U SPECIAL ENVOY TO THE GREAT LAKES REGION MEETS PRESIDENT YOWERI.K. MUSEVENI AT STATE HOUSE, NAKASERO

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uganda is pleased to inform that H.E. Johan Borgstam, The E.U Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region held a meeting with President Yoweri. K. Museveni at State House, Nakasero.

During the meeting, the Special Envoy briefed The President on his mandate and specifically indicated that he was tasked to spearhead the implementation of the EU Great Lakes Strategy and ensuring coherence of the EU member states in the region.

In so doing H.E. Johan Borgstam is compelled to engage the leaders within the region and consult on the current situation particularly on the security situation in the Eastern part of DRC and how they to engage with the EU. He informed the President about the  contribution the EU had made towards the Luanda and Nairobi processes.

The Special Envoy also informed that through executing his duties, he met with the President of Angola, Burundi and Rwanda and intends to meet other leaders in the region. He further appreciated Uganda’s role in regional integration and her contribution towards fostering peace and stability. He went on to request the President to share his thoughts about the region, specifically the Eastern DRC.

In his remarks, H.E. Y.K. Museveni gave an overview on the conflict and leadership in the region, pointing out the absence of proper ideological orientation which had pushed the region into the politics of identity, tribe, and religion as opposed to regional issues of mutual interest.

President Museveni also pointed out the positive economic and security developments that had been achieved and here, mentioned the joint road construction projects between the governments of Uganda and the DRC. He also indicated that joint security operations have been made to ensure that the region continues to have relative peace for economic prosperity. 

The Special Envoy appreciated the President’s insights and pledged EU’s continued support towards achieving peace for a secured and prosperous region

Also in attendance was, Ambassador Jan Sadek-Head of EU Delegation to the Republic of Uganda, Amb. Guillaume Chartrain-Deputy Head of EU Delegation and the Advisor to the Special Envoy
